Why it’s OK to ask for help

For many, admitting you need help is one of the hardest steps towards recovery but it is also one of the most important.

At some point in our lives we all need a helping hand and even the strongest need support sometimes. It could be in regards to something small that you are finding it difficult to manage, yet if left it could manifest into a much larger issue.

Firstly, alter how you think about the issue

Whatever the issue is, you don’t have to go through alone. Come to the realisation that you’re only one person – you deserve the chance to receive help from others. Open up and give yourself more free time to do what you enjoy. The help you receive will go a long way in making the problem seem more manageable and as a result less overwhelming.

Everyone has a different tolerance level- a person able to juggle at lot at once, such as an active social life, intense career and healthy lifestyle without actively seeking any kind of assistance isn’t stronger than someone who struggles- equally they may be struggling more that it appears on a surface level.

Many people struggle to delegate tasks- maybe it is because they wish to remain in complete control, or are too anxious to ask for help. Yet, whilst they might be able to live this way for a period of time they are in danger of experiencing burnout – it will eventually become too much to handle and result in the body crashing.

You may be surprised just how much the people around you are willing to help. If you speak up and simply ask the question: “will you help me?” You will feel so much better. A great weight will be lifted. You’ll be able to find the balance that enables you to focus on what matters.

It’ll lead to more time for you

Life’s many stresses cause us to neglect ourselves from time to time. We forget to find the time to step away from it all and to just relax. We should be aiming to do this everyday – whether it’s for five minutes before bed, or for 45 minutes at the gym. We all need the chance to clear our head and speaking up, asking for help and giving ourselves permission will ultimately lead to this. Give it a try -it’ll help put things into perspective.

Additionally, an extra pair of hands to help with everyday tasks may result in a massive improvement in your mindset. You’ll have more time for mood enhancing activities such as exercise or playing with your children. Work doesn’t have to be so stressful, if you are able to be more honest with the people around you.

Don’t be afraid to reevaluate

With your new found spare time, and less pressure at home and work now that you’ve spoken up; don’t be afraid to take the time to reevaluate certain aspects of your life. Take a look at your current situation and ask, do I dedicate enough time to myself? Make sure you do. Think about others around you – live the best life you possibly can.

Getting to the point where you are comfortable delegating tasks to people and no longer feeling burnout will only be possible once you asked for that initial help. Speaking out will not only strengthen aspects of your life but also allow you to grab life with both hands and really make the most of positive situations.

Sometimes it’s the smallest changes that make the biggest impact. It is OK to ask for help, so just ask…once you do you will soon see that often it is unrealistic to manage things alone.
